Talent Day

On Wednesday 2 February, the Talent Day Winter Edition started at a school in Gaasperdam: with three groups of 3/4, each for an hour, outside around the school for 11 weeks. This gave the teachers the opportunity to catch up on work and to focus for a while on the organisation of education: teacher support. Besides nature experiences, the kids could choose between digi, boot camp, weaving and ironing beads. Next to the school is a beautiful piece of city green, even a park, in the middle of the enormous residential buildings. Amsterdam Zuid-Oost has understood that very well. And the Gaasperplas is just a stone's throw away, great for the lessons to come. My attention was now focused on discovering the surroundings together, what does Mother Nature offer just around the corner? Pigeons scurry among the barren leaves, blackbirds toss them aside in search of surprised insects, while the woodpecker rumbles and the robin sings his famous song. But my goal was the rhododendrons, where the bud-eaters were to be found (a fungus). The spores are spread by the rhododendron cicada. They are not difficult to find, because the infected buds are brown or even black. Healthy buds are nice and green. Fortunately, there were enough bud-eaters for everyone, and the kids busily searched with their magnifying glasses. And much more was discovered. Proudly I was drawn to all corners of the park: "Master, look what I've found! Along the way, we found some nice spring flowers, and especially the winter mushrooms were in demand, which caused a lot of amazement.

Summer schools

Holiday time. No school, but because of Corona also not many outings with school. So: the Summer School!
In Amsterdam Nieuw-West, Amstelveen and Zuid-Oost several activities were organised. Whole days, afternoons or every hour and a half a different theme (dancing, cooking, theatre, crafts, music and of course nature experiences, including boat trips). At one location, it was all based on enrolment; at another, it was all for classes/groups. Here is an impression of my contributions.

Amsterdam children as nature conservationists

The work of Stichting NatuurWijs continues to surprise and inspire. For the purpose of a pitch for the Edwin Bouwfonds Foundation, some of Amsterdam's NatureWise people submitted great ideas for possible projects in Amsterdam in 2019. From the ideas, one project was chosen and developed: "Amsterdam children as nature protectors". The application was granted so that, as a pilot project, we can have 100 children from Amsterdam's disadvantaged neighbourhoods participate in NatuurWijs activities outside of school hours, during the summer holidays, this year for the third time. I too was allowed to go on a three-day trip with a group of kids. 4 NatureWise teachers, 7 volunteers and interns, who could give a group of 20 children all their attention. And how we enjoyed it! Locations: the Bijlmerweide (South-East), the Bretten (Sloterdijk) and the Diemerbos. Searching for itchy critters, building a shelter for animals and people, scooping up water creatures, watering plants, making a raft for frogs, clearing away plastic (and other rubbish), adopting a tree, discovering special plants, making seed bombs, tea and herb butter. And of course everything is done with respect for nature and each other. "I have never felt grass between my toes before".

After-school nature clubs: El Kadisia

With Ecokids in Amsterdam as an important client, my after-school activities are gradually expanding. This spring, I was allowed to take care of two groups (3 and 4) at an Islamic school in Amsterdam West. Since most of the kids were born in Amsterdam, it is not very different from other schools. I introduced the children to nature around the corner and with full amazement they experienced an extensive nature programme for 8 weeks! Wonderful: technology of everyday life

Wonderwel offers an educational programme that connects with the immediate living environment of children. It evokes a sense of wonder about the functioning of basic services at home and at school. Who remembers how a tap works or a toilet? How does electricity get to the wall socket and where does the bin liner go? To find answers to these questions, children go and investigate for themselves. This programme is given throughout your primary school period. I have recently become involved with Wonderwel. I felt right away that this was something fun! But also for me, a Handy Harry with a background in nature. In mid-December 2019, 16 schools closed in Amsterdam West to make a statement: there is a dire shortage of teachers! The kids were welcome all week in cultural centre Ru Paré. We volunteered the Wonderwel programme for a whole day. An absolute success! WWW.WONDERWEL.NU
